Book Review: Love, Life and Elephants: An African Love Story

So every now and then I blog about some books which travelers and/or lovers of animals might be interested in. If you love Africa and animals you just have to read this book – now. Daphne Sheldrick’s memoirs of her extraordinary life provide insight into life in Kenya during and after colonialism as well as surprising insights into the world of animals. As the title suggests it is about the love story between her and Tsavo Game Ranger David Sheldrick, but it is so much more. It is a love story with Africa and everything around her, especially animals. Daphne has a gift in understanding animals and her perseverance and dedication towards rescuing and rehabilitating them makes her one of our true conservation heroes. What makes this book so compelling is that is reads like an epic fiction novel and offers insights into animal behavior not really described by science.

Nowadays Dame Daphne Sheldrick runs the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – I highly encourage you to support this worthy cause which I support as well.  I have adopted two adorable elephants from their Nairobi orphanage, Lima Lima and Ngasha.
