Ghosts of the Golden Thirstland

Ghosts of the Golden Thirstland

Wildlife photographers are obsessed with chasing the perfect light – the more golden the better! When I was planning for my trip to the Kgalagadi I knew I wanted to take the classic atmospheric backlit photos with dust and animals in silhouette. Easier said than done! When there was the light there were no animals and vice versa. And of course there’s the tricky issue of the dust which of course doesn’t show up on demand. But one evening in Nossob, I found the perfect conditions for this classic shot of some wildebeest at the Rooikop waterhole, kicking up dust with their hooves. To me this image just screams “Kalahari” and instantly takes me back to dawn and dusk forays looking for animals in the magical Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
