There are some special places in Southern Africa when you can get really up close and personal with wild habituated meerkats, one of these is the Kalahari Meerkat Project in South Africa, close to Van Zylsrus. Mind you, these are no ordinary meerkats, they are the TV stars of the BBC series “Meerkat Manor”. They are also the subject of some really intense research being conducted by the University of Cambridge, which practically follow them around the clock. I was lucky enough to be accompanied by one of the researchers to follow the Whiskers family for a couple of hours on a bitterly cold winter morning. Needless to say it was so much fun to just sit close to them watching them go around their morning business, completely unperturbed by our presence.
