Fearful Zebras

Fearful Zebras

When I was in the Maasai Mara in late September 2013, the migration was at its tail end with not much happening. I witnessed only one crossing, which was quite small but still impressive. These two zebras decided to cross the Mara river by themselves, without the safety of numbers, but then still huddled together in fear – they probably realized too late that their haste to plunge in without waiting for the others might have been a mistake!  Their fear was rightly justified as a hungry crocodile was lurking quite close to them. This was at around midday when the light was very harsh, so I converted the image to black and white as I thought it would work better with the high contrast and high key approach I took here. You don’t necessarily need to put your camera equipment away outside of the golden hours!  And yes, both of the zebras made it safely to the other side of the river.
