Pensive Hyena

Pensive Hyena

Hyenas are so often touted as being ugly. I beg to differ, I think they are beautiful, even cute when they are young. I photographed this young Spotted Hyena on the plains of the Maasai Mara on an early morning game drive. It did not tolerate our presence for too long though, as it got camera shy and quickly retreated to its underground den. I am pleased that the sun was still quite low so I could get some wonderful light in its eyes. Most of the time their eyes seem dark and lifeless – which people often find creepy. As an added bonus, in the full res image one can even see the reflection of our safari vehicle!
