White Footed Sportive Lemur

The variety of the animals in Madagascar is staggering. In every place I visited there was always something new to see and photograph. This White Footed Sportive Lemur was hanging around in a tree quite close to the camp where we were staying at and it was spotted by one of the eagle-eyed guides. This creature is nocturnal but they are easily seen whilst snoozing during the daylight hours, providing you can see through their camouflage! Just look at those amazing huge eyes!

While there is a huge diversity of animals in Madagascar many of them are confined to very small pockets of land due to the rampant habitat destruction. This particular lemur prefers gallery & spiny forest habitats of which there are very few left. Both of those habitats are found within the Berenty Reserve, where this photo was taken. Tourism is one of the most effective conduits to preserve such habitats which would otherwise be simply destroyed for firewood and agriculture.
