Wild Dogs, also known as Painted Wolves are highly efficient predators. Their prowess comes from the fact that they are excellent team workers with incredible stamina. While observing them resting or playing one might easily forget just how deadly they are – as they look pretty much like domestic dogs! I spent some time with these wonderful creatures in Mana Pools – on foot. While they are not usually dangerous to humans it is a bit disconcerting to remember that they rip their prey apart and consume it in mere minutes.

When I took this portrait the sun was already high up in the sky and the light was harsh and uninspiring. In wildlife photography there is no control over the wild subjects and thus one needs to be ready to exploit any opportunity no matter how poor it initially seems. So I was deliberately overexposing my images in order to blow out the background and bring out the detail in the dark patches of the wild dog’s fur. I then overexposed a little bit more during post processing to turn the background into pure white resulting in a high key image which I converted into monochrome.
