Standing Generuk

Standing Generuk

The main reason I visited Samburu, apart from the fact that I love visiting new places, was to observe and photograph the unique species that inhabit the area. One of the most interesting of these is the Generuk. This antelope frequently stands on its hind legs in order to reach up for leaves that few others can access. This behaviour combined with its long neck gives the Generuk a reach of about 2 metres off the ground – a significant evolutionary advantage especially considering the arid environments that it inhabits. This behaviour is also quite entertaining to watch and photograph. Generuks do not need to drink water, which is unusual for mammals and especially antelopes – all the moisture they need is acquired through their diet. The one photographed here is a female – easily distinguishable from the male due to the lack of horns.
